Domus by Van Geest Design & Rob Doyle Design

Van Geest Design & Rob Doyle Design has been shortlisted for the Concept Under 40 Metres Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.

Van Geest Design, in collaboration with Rob Doyle, has unveiled a revolutionary yacht design concept called Domus. With a length of 40 meters, the sailing trimaran offers an interior volume that is equivalent to a 60-meter motor yacht. The yacht’s name refers to a single-story house built around an atrium, and the designers have incorporated this concept to create an airy, open atmosphere on board.

The team has extensively researched the practicalities and safety elements associated with trimarans to ensure that the yacht is not only luxurious but also safe and practical. They strongly believe that if one desires the benefits of multihulls in a yacht that is 40-meters or larger, a trimaran is the only practical solution. The designers were determined to challenge the conventional design of superyachts and create a new standard for multi-hull sailing superyachts.

The yacht’s design aims to bring the exterior surroundings into the interior of the yacht, a trend that has been popular in the industry in recent years. The team approached the design from an architectural standpoint, creating a protected space that maximizes the use of the one-level setup. All spaces have a view of the outside, but they are also connected to the communal exterior and interior spaces, providing an unmatched sense of connectivity.

Thanks to the fact that the hull can be raised out of the water, the trimaran has a wider beam, which translates to more interior volume and deck space. This also results in better damping effects at anchor and reduced motions, providing a more stable and comfortable platform than catamarans or monohulls. Additionally, the yacht is designed to heel at a 2-degree angle, providing guests with an unmatched level of comfort underway.

Domus features a uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro regeneration, and fuel cells, providing unlimited range with zero emissions. The optimized system of solar power and battery storage enables the yacht to motor during daylight hours and switch to the battery system at night, resulting in a fully silent and zero-emission yacht while at anchor. This is a significant departure from the days of generator noise and exhaust smells, offering guests an idyllic anchorage experience.

In summary, Van Geest Design & Rob Doyle Design, have created a revolutionary yacht design concept that challenges conventional superyacht design. The Domus trimaran offers an unprecedented level of luxury, safety, and practicality, with an interior volume that rivals that of a 60-meter motor yacht. Its combination of solar power, hydro regeneration, and fuel cells provides unlimited range with zero emissions, making it an eco-friendly and sustainable solution for luxury yachting. The designers’ approach to the design from an architectural standpoint creates a sense of connectivity between the exterior surroundings and the interior spaces, offering guests an unparalleled yachting experience.
