Emma Painter Interiors

Waterside Home by Emma Painter Interiors

Emma Painter Interiors have been shortlisted for Living Space – UK Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards.

This project involved the refurbishment of a 1920s waterside property located on the south coast, once a mill worker’s cottage very much part of the history of this seaside town. The brief for Emma Painter Interiors was to create a stylish contemporary home full of character, making sense of the spaces. The property had previously undergone substantial renovation leaving the owner with what he described as ‘a soul-less set of boxes’.

Emma Painter Interiors were brought on board to bring the house back to life and in line with its gorgeous location overlooking the water. The mission was to provide a home in which the client could relax and finally feel ‘at home’. The designers set about rethinking every detail of the interiors to provide intuitive flow throughout. They were also asked to design three outside spaces to bring balance and provide the inside-outside lifestyle so much a part of living by the sea, including an outside ‘room’ to take in the morning sun.

Every inch of this interior has been given a purpose, making use of the travel of light through the interiors during the day. Bespoke furniture has been designed by Emma Painter Interiors to guide the inhabitant through the characterful spaces. Colour has been utilised to provide ‘moments of joy’ and surprise elements of fun. The design draws key elements from the coastal location so that the interiors work in tandem with the exterior of the property, providing a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

The design takes its cues from the waterside location using textures and colour to reflect the changing light on the water and beautiful sunsets viewed across it. The starting point for the design was a stunning Corten Steel sculpture chosen to denote the home’s history as a Mill worker’s cottage. This sculpture brings to mind a mill wheel and is positioned near the entrance to the home. Particular attention was given to bringing the incredible views from this home into the design brief and Emma Painter Interiors also took on the design of three outside spaces to tie the inside and outside design together in this stunning coastal location.
