Blakes London have been shortlisted for Bespoke Cabinetry/Installation Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards.

Understated, muted, with a touch of glamour, this kitchen makes for a design that is not only on-trend but has the elegance and maturity to stand the test of time. The client and their young family needed something practical, but as art dealers, were also looking for something unique, glamourous, and hardwearing. The kitchen space was located in the lower ground floor of a terrace property, so daylight was an issue. Blakes London were keen to keep the space feeling clean, fresh, light open and airy to combat any feelings of being in a low ceilinged, tight semi-underground space.

Blakes London had designed the couple a kitchen in their previous property, so they were keen to keep aspects that had worked well before in this new design. This scheme successfully brings together several different materials within a small space to create a cohesive design. The mixed-use of materials both luxurious and raw, that when combined, bring together a scheme that is both elegant, yet understated and muted. The brass detailing adds glamour to the rough sawn cabinetry, and the timber brings texture to the smooth painted finish of the wall run units.

The Paonazzo Marble island is a showstopper. The veining of the marble complements the movement and tonality of the concrete floor and the timber cladding on the island brings warmth and texture to the scheme. Blakes London feel that the low profiles on the shaker inspired cabinetry have worked well to give a more contemporary vibe to a traditional style of cabinetry.

The kitchen space is part of an open plan living space which links to a dining area and then out onto the sunken garden. Blakes London felt it was important that the kitchen did not feel too utilitarian as it could be seen from the living space. Therefore, they intentionally kept the tall wall cabinetry to a minimum, instead created display cabinetry on one wall and a shelf above the hob run, to display artwork and to make the kitchen feel more connected to the living space. This was made possible by installing a Bora hob with downdraft extraction which negated the need for an overhead extractor and wall units to cover it.

There are so many moments and layers within this kitchen that captures the attention of the viewer for just that moment longer. Blakes London especially favour the tactile nature of the surfaces.
