Australian Designers

This weeks best of Australian Design round up

As publishers for the design industry globally, we feel it is vitally important that we continue to share your work, promote your new collections, endorse new ideas and innovations and show the design world just how strong we are as a community. We may not be able to travel to conferences, overseas meetings and events for a while, but we at design et al, will do all we can to expose your work to clients globally during this time.

Every part of the business will continue to work in the same way. The aim for Birch Tree house was to create a gentle sculptural but robust family home set amongst a beautiful restful garden. The Design Brief was to create a 4 Bedroom home with various family areas maximising the long north (maximum sun) aspect leading towards a beautiful pool. The approach both internally and externally was to create a dialogue of poetic curved volumes, light and delicate details as a background canvas for a busy family life. The volumes of space are soft sculptural forms that overlap and intersect creating workable family zones both inside and out. Natural light and soft materials were selected to create a chiaroscuro of light and shade.

Tell us a little about your background in design
I have studied both Interior and Landscape Design and view the home as a unified combination of inside and outdoor living spaces. This is unique to the Australian design industry. After providing services as an interior designer for many years I came to the belief that the success of an interior is rendered even more successful when both indoor and outdoor spaces speak to one another. My dual affection for interiors and landscapes gives rise to a unified and seamless design aesthetic that is so very well suited to the Australian lifestyle and climate.

How would you describe your personal design style?
Understated, relaxed luxury, subtle layering and naturally pure fibres. We believe in the slow movement of interior design. Interiors that are built slowly, layer upon layer using quality products. Buy well, buy once. Advocates of interiors that feel like they have evolved over time, we love supporting local design and artisans and designing homes that are intensely personal.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
Nature. Always.
Best texture. Best colour combinations.
Organic, curvaceous, natural.
