The interior architectural intention of r006 was for Ashley Botten Design Inc to refine, without interrupting, the existing architectural elements. This had to be done alongside the modernisation of the property – cohesively adding updated functionality to the operational side of the project and including design elements that marry contemporary style with authentic architectural elements. The material finishes in this project are natural, matte, textural and authentic.

Reimagining this 19th-century interior for 21st-century living is all about renovation in balance with restoration. Breath-taking original elements such as the masterful detailing on the great room ceiling, a soaring stone fireplace, a one-of-a-kind stairway railing were all revived to underscore their authenticity. Replicated doors, baseboards, leaded-glass windows, old technique plaster work and more connect the space to its earliest beginnings, while Ashley Botten Design Inc’s thoughtful updates of sophisticated oak flooring and cabinetry, honed marble countertops, unlacquered brass fixtures and a subtle colour palette ensure the space is undoubtedly designed for today’s style of living.

For this project Ashley Botten Design Inc had to consider the balance of the original features and the necessities of modern life – one could not outweigh the other. The key aspect was for the designers to learn the history of the home and to allow space for the beautiful details and scale of the old, and refine these by adding the new. Embracing these existing features and using contemporary design to amplify their effect results in a timeless and unique space. The design integrates into itself and works so well for the property because it is authentic, rather than ‘of the moment’.
