The client purchased a dated developer style property with great renovation potential due to the location and existing footprint. They planned to take advantage of the site and create a Miami style glass house overlooking a redesigned garden and with a light filled interior, designed with contemporary functionality suitable for a busy family of six. Clare Gaskin Interiors’ brief was to refurbish and transform this extensive 10,000 square foot residential property with a radically altered open floor plan and FF&E throughout. The project involved a complete reconfiguration and extension into what has become a thoroughly modern country house with a clean lined contemporary look.

The client had a strong vision for an open floor plan, requiring the removal of several rooms to create a light filled core to the property, consisting of one oversized kitchen, living and dining space with uninterrupted views of the redesigned garden. The challenge was to make sense of this vast space while maintaining a family friendly environment suitable for entertaining and contemporary living. To do this, Clare Gaskin Interiors developed a scheme of luxurious textures, bespoke joinery, and a varied colour scheme, including pops of colour in the living room and study contrasting with more subtle and elegant tones in the formal lounge and dining area. For the children’s entertainment zone, the designers maximised the square footage of the basement to create a state of the art media and games room with walls covered in a 3D suede wallcovering to improve the acoustics.

Aside from the design aesthetic, storage was also a key part of the brief, with the provision of clever bespoke storage solutions to discretely store a trove of possessions throughout the house. The eaves in the master bedroom were built out behind the bed to store luggage and sports equipment and in the daughter’s bedroom, made challenging with low ceilings and shallow eaves, Clare Gaskin Interiors installed joinery into the perimeter to make the space usable with a daybed style social area with deep drawers.

Being a London based interior designer, Clare Gaskin Interiors don’t often get to work on a project of this scale. Likewise, the clients were not used to having this much space, so the designers thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to personalise this modern country house to their style/needs together with their bold use of colour and willingness to introduce quirky touches. The contemporary design has both style and swagger and Clare Gaskin Interiors love how the living areas fully benefit from the floor to ceiling windows throughout.
